AFL's big return
February 10th 2010 09:48
The 2010 AFL season is close to kick off with the NAB Cup Pre-Season competition starting this week, while Australians sweltered in the heat, some players were lightly roasted during the off season, with an off season from hell for the AFL they are ready to put that ugly chapter behind them and rally up for a massive pre-season cup. The Cats will be without Matthew Stokes for 8 weeks after he was arrested for possession of drugs, Carlton got the Blues and has suspended players too.
Lovett or not the Saints are going to go into their first pre-season cup fixture next week against Collingwood without troubled recruit Andrew Lovett who has filed a notice of grievance and will hope to play ahead of his court case for alleged sexual assault. The new Magpies Luke Ball and Darren Jolly will be excited to run out in their new colours, Luke Ball already says he has a lot to prove, he has a lot to pay back as well after the saga that went down before the AFL Draft in November.
While you sit there and say there was nothing happening in summer in the cricket, you only had to pick up a paper to see that there was a lot of action going on for the wrong reasons over the summer months. But football is back, well the pre-season anyway, you may not rate it but I am sure there are many ready to say thank god it's back! Friday Night the NAB Cup comp kicks off over in the West under lights as the West Coast Eagles battle the Bombers.
A tough encounter for the bombers as they will play in the heat of Western Australia, Saturday afternoon it's a South Australian Showdown, fierce state rivals Adelaide and Port Adelaide are going to clash, the Crows still hurting after the way they crashed out of the finals are battling a Power side that are already seeking opinions of psychologists to pick a new captain, whereas most punters are consuting their psychics to place a bet on who will win the NAB Cup and the AFL premiership cup.
The first ball will be kicked in anger Friday Night the loser of the game bows out and will be sent across Australia in the NAB Regional Challenge, whereas the winner earns themselves a week off as the rest of Round 1 starts next week, with the Pies/Saints blockbuster that will see Ball meet his old team for the first time, and the unhappy Saints will look to make someone pay for the 2009 Grand Final loss, a subject most Collingwood supporters could very well discuss during the game.
Start shopping for tickets, and getting yourself some sunscreen because the weather isn't the only thing that will be hot this summer, oh and there is still the cricket, but by then Australia would have wrapped up another series and left us all with the thoughts of kicking goals, laying big tackles, big marks, hard hits, oh and a winning team of course.
