Cricket Australia needs to return the tri-series
February 2nd 2010 13:20
After a disappointing summer of cricket result wise, I think that the One Day Series needs to be reverted back to the Tri-Series bring some life back into it. i have found that this new format of having the teams just play 5 games against Australia each has become stale already. The excitement of watching the three teams, or even four if you toss in Austalia 'A' battling to make a final of this tournament has always made me very interested in watching the games, even games not involving Australia.
Back in the Summer of 1997 I attended New Zealand vs South Africa at Bellerive Oval, and it came down to the wire, the Kiwi's chasing the runs down that the South Africans had set them, it was a nail biting finish, in which the Kiwi's managed to get over the line, when the game looked like a certain South African win. Now the crowds weren't always as big as one would have liked, this time however there were a decent amount of people out to watch cricket in Tasmania.
I would also imagine if the price was cheaper to go to a game of cricket you would see many more people getting along to a neutral game, I am sure if there was a Pakistan/West Indies game close to me, and I had the money I would be there in a heart beat to watch Dwayne Bravo, Dwayne Smth, Kieron Pollard, Shahid Afridi, and Naved ul-Hassan after their Big Bash exploits. Though Afridi now has been banned for two games following his biting of the ball against Australia Sunday Night at the W.A.C.A Ground.
I remember one summer, Australia tackled the Australia 'A' side a match which saw guys like Darren Lehmann, Dean Jones who couldn't break back into the Australian side leading the A side against the Aussies, of late it seems the 'A' side doesn't get much attention I remember also them battling Zimbabwe one Summer as well, which too entertaining, the stars of tomorrow, playing today in a match at the highest level, what better way to prepare some of the young Ausralian cricketers, and also those who cannot make the Australia side and those who are veterans play alongside and tutor them?
The price of tickets to a cricket match was surely the reason the Tri-Series' crowds were down a bit, but I always found it interesting to see these international crowds battle in Australia those without Foxtel got to enjoy it on the TV at least. I think that the ICC may need to look into the pricing of tickets to games, and making them more affordable, maybe also doing some deals, Ford Ranger Cup games have had free entry for those who have a valid Metlink Ticket, what if this was used to bring in a discount for the International cricket games not involving Australia? Or, if you have attended a past One Day International you can also attend this game at a better rate? It will bring people to Australia's games, but also get them a chance to see the other games.
I love the Commonwealth Bank One Day Series have done since I Was a kid I would watch every game televised, whether it be involving Australia or not, and I have seen some classic games as well, judging by the way the summer has gone, I would imagine that Australia would have been easily into the final, though they have not yet battled the Windies in a One Dayer this summer, but their test series saw Australia dominate. But Pakistan/West indies for a chance to play in the final against Australia? That could have brought some life to the series of games, I always love Australia wrong, do not get me wrong but by no fault of their own Australia has not really been challenged this Summer.
Minus the last one dayer where, let's face it Australia didn't honestly need to win, they had already taken the One Day Series 4-nil up until the game, and there was a bit of showing off in the game, which lead Pakistan to snap back into the game, sadly the most interesting part of the game was not the game itself but some fan getting tackled, and the biting of the ball and the fallout from that. Which as I have said has seen Afridi banned for 2 games.
The last meeting of the two sides will be the Twenty20 game on Friday, after that the Pakistani's will head home, or to wherever their next series will be, Australia will tackle the West Indies in the 2nd round of 5 games, finishing the Summer at Bellerive Oval in Tasmania's first ever international Twenty20 clash. It has been a season of firsts for Tasmania cricket wise, the first ever game under-lights at Bellerive, and soon the states first hosting of a Twenty20 game.
Once the summer of cricket is over, in Australia at least, the Aussies will be headed to New Zealand in what will be a rather interesting clash but that's a blog for another time. A return of the Tri-Series is a must at least that's my thoughts I have found this to be a better format then the current 5 per side series which I didn't like when I first heard about it.
Now with Australia white washing the series I like it even less, whether or not Cricket Australia ever envisioned a series white wash is irrelevant, if Australia white washes the West Indies without them putting up a fight it will see another series ending the way the summer has pretty much gone with a total domination by the Australians, I guess you can put the blame on Pakistan and West Indies themselves, but the series should have still been a Tri-Series.
