Fitzroy lives on in the hearts of a small community

It seems like a life time ago that Fitzroy last played an AFL game, but it was not quite that long ago it was on September 1, 1996, that t the Fremantle Football Club hosted Fitzroy at Subiaco Oval for Fitzroy's last game. More than 22,000 people attended as Fitzroy played out their last game, managing to do so with dignity, they managed to win the last quarter by 2 points, but by that time the margin had blown out to 86 points the final siren sounded on the Roys at 4.45pm that day with them losing to Fremantle 24.13 (157) to Fitzroy 10.11 (71)
it's a day that most Fitzroy fans still remember, even now at The Animal Enclosure the small Fitzroy community there talk about the glory days, the dark days and even discuss sponsoring a player at Fitzroy VAFA club to help promote the Roys and bring more people to discuss these glory days. The sponsorship idea was started by Joe, who posts as Banga on the site "I think it would be a fantastic opportunity." he says.
The sponsorship has been kept updated by a very passionate Roys supporter, Danielle (dannigirl) Condron a super moderator for the site, who has made sure that the sponsorship tallies remain updated and keeps the details known to all. The Fitzroy Sponsorship can be seen here but this is not The Animal Enclosure's only pledge to this sponsorship, another user by name of Tarkyn_24 has pledged money for every goal and behind kicked by a Fitzroy member in the sites Fantasy Sports League the Rampage Fantasy Football League the tally can be seen here
The spirit of the Roys will forever live on, the memories are there, there's still the Firzroy Reds that made the VAFA Grand final last season, but at least one community still remembers the team they held so dear. Whatever the future does hold for the Fitzroy Reds, the Fitzroy Football Club will live on whether it be on a small little forum, at the local pub, or at a Fitzroy Reds came as the older supporters tell their kids, and grandkids about the day they saw the mighty Roys run out for the last time.
The memories will never be far away.
