Is Sam Newman getting too old for the Footy Show?
May 15th 2008 07:24
Hate him or love him – the Footy Show would not be the same without Sam Newman.
However, lately, Sam has been getting a little off track football, instead choosing to spend at times, over half an hour going through his segment ‘Sam's Mailbag.” Newman takes away valuable time that could instead be used to discuss the games of the week, coaching staff and clubs.
Newman’s recent debacle with Channel Nine colleague, Caroline Wilson, has put him in an awkward position in the public eye. He was forced to apologize on national T.V after he made derogatory comments and actions towards Wilson on the football show a few weeks ago. I have no doubt his absence at the annual Logie Awards had something to do with this.
Furthermore, last week, Newman stated that women had no place in AFL. In particular he stated that women had no place at the board level of Football Clubs.
Given Newman works with Caroline Wilson and also amongst other notable female sports journalists such as Christie Malthouse, Rebecca Wilson and Samantha Lane – I won’t be surprised if Newman is not forced to apologize for his derogatory comments this week.
As a female myself, I believe I know as much about football as many males. For Sam Newman to say something like this on national television, shows that AFL Football will continue to be a man’s world if we let it.
