Lovett officially charged, career close to over?

February 15th 2010 12:09
Former Bomber turned Saint Andrew Lovett has been officially charged with sexual assault that occurred just before Christmas, Lovett has been indefinitely suspended from the St. Kilda football Club while police investigate the matter. Since then Lovett has filed a notice of grievance and now the matter has been made official with a charge of one count of sexual assault for the troubled AFL player.

This is just another setback to the career of Lovett, and could almost spell the end of the new Saints career before he even laces up a boot for the club. While Lovett is presumed innocent until proven guilty and with all of his previous troubles it must be asked, how long until the end? The Saints have had previous troubles with alleged rapes and have handled this news as best they could but the AFL must be getting a bit tired of players acting up over Christmas it was a Blue saga, and before that there were many other players acting badly a Tiger draftee has been charged for an assault as well.

Should he be found innocent there would be questions raised, if the next screw up by Lovett would be met with the Saints axing the player from their side. Or will the AFL step in and say "This is enough we're going to take matters into our hands"? No doubt if he is found guilty his AFL career is over, and should he be guilty AFL player or not the law penalties should be the same if he was just some man on the street that has done something like this.

It soon makes you fear for a young players career should he step foot out of place in a minor way if his career will be cut short or he will be heavily penalised should he step a foot wrong. To the Saints credit they have stood firm on the ban that has been put in place, and they have not allowed any speculation from their end they have not denied anything, not that they could if they wanted to.

At this early stage I would hope the AFLPA has arranged someone to council Lovett and give him advice and keep him from doing something stupid, right now he is an innocent man until the courts say otherwise which is why he would need someone to help him through the process that is not to say he doesn't have a lawyer for that, but a lawyer cannot help his mental state.

Lovett would also need someone there if he was found guilty I think by now there needs to be someone to help him get a grip on his life, he needs a way to make the changes in his life to prevent any future incidents, because if this one has not done it, one more could see his AFL career over.
