New AFL Team bound for the Gold Coast – Good or Bad?
May 15th 2008 06:34
2011 is the year the Gold Coast will to play home to a new AFL team.
However, the question on everyone’s minds remains: Is there enough of a support base in Queensland to warrant another team? With the Brisbane Lions having an impressive start to season 2008, will fans and supporters make the switch towards a team which could fail or remain winless for many years to come?
With AFL teams such as Melbourne having a dismal year in both wins and supporter numbers – should the AFL be encouraging the makings of a new team? Perhaps the AFL should invest time and support in teams such as Melbourne before they do so with the proposed team for the Gold Coast.
If this proposed Gold Coast team goes ahead, I believe other teams in the AFL will suffer. I read one article which stated up to eight of the top 24 draft picks in 2010 would go to the new team. On top of this, clubs will trade top draft picks in exchange for senior players. For example, the Gold Coast could trade picks one and three and a player to Fremantle, for Mathew Pavlich.
There is no doubt the AFL will push thousands, if not millions of dollars towards the new team in order to ensure it does not fail. Failure would not only be an embarrassment to the AFL, it would also be a huge waste of time and money.
Former Brisbane Lions superstar, Michael Voss is tipped to be coach of the new club. Today Voss was appointed as a consultant to work on how the playing list might be put together. In other words, he will be working on how he believes he will put his team together when the time comes. It’s unfair advantage if you ask me.
Whatever happens, let’s hope the AFL doesn’t stuff this up. All I can say to them is: Good Luck.

Regardless I think a team on the gold coast is a great idea. They'll have no problem convincing players to move there.

I'm not so sure about a new team in the AFL.
However I suppose it will be good when every team plays each other twice - rather than some teams being disadvantaged played for example Geelong twice and others playing Melbourne twice.
