No new footy stadium bound for Adelaide

AFL Chief Executive, Andrew Demetriou has not backed plans for a completely new football stadium in Adelaide.
Instead, Mr Demetriou is supporting the redevelopment of Adelaide’s run down AAMI Stadium.
Mr Demetriou said a new stadium could cost up to one billion dollars to build. "You certainly can't justify spending $1 billion of taxpayers' money on a new stadium,” he said.
However, Mr Demetriou has admitted AAMI Stadium needs significant amount money spent on it in order for it to be up to the standards of other football grounds around Australia.
The South Australian Liberal opposition has plans to build a completely new stadium which could be used for all sporting codes. However, Adelaide’s Labor Government, led by Mike Rann has opposed the new stadium.
The Rann Government is instead proposing a new hospital which will be built in place of the existing run down Royal Adelaide Hospital.
Mr Demetriou said he could not justify spending that sort of money on a new stadium for South Australia as it would be difficult to get any return.
