Post Grand Final Thoughts
October 12th 2011 13:49
It's been a few days now since the AFL Grand Final came and went, as a Collingwood supporter I held hopes during the game that the Magpies were going to get home. Alas it was not to be, and the better team won in the end. I was accused of being a bad loser after the game, interestingly enough not be opposition supporters but someone that was a Pies fan.
I have congratulated the winners, made sure they knew that I thought they were the better side and that I was still damn proud of my side for making it after the week before. We were in it for at least 3 Quarters and then the last quarter well we had nothing left to give.
I would go through the game and dissect it all, but I am not that interested in reliving another Grand Final loss. I love footy, love my football club, but I am still disappointed in the effort in the last quarter. At least one performance on Grand Final day was worse than the Magpies in the end and that was Meat Loaf.
But it seems Meat was sick, so we will forgive him, though I doubt the AFL who paid so much will ever forgive him. Whatever happened to the AFL trying to put on a decent show? The AFL insists on the pre-game entertainment, so let's get organised people.
Get Mike Brady to sing Up There Cazaly, and One Day In September, these songs have become anthems for the game. Last year at the first Grand Final the new INXS were below the mark, and sounded horrible.
No one will ever beat the real INXS but sadly with their frontman dead, this is what we have. But what about some of these other Aussie bands? Eskimo Joe were touring Australia, The Living End were playing in Australia.
The game itself lived upto it's hype, the game was there to be won as the Cats took a lead into the final change and then the Magpies were just not able to find a man that could fire a shot. The Cats ran riot and now have yet another premiership, Micks career has come to an end.
It is a shame that Mick Malthouse leaves the game after a Grand Final loss, it is a shame as well that any discussion about the game ends in those same old words "Colliwobbles" the problem with the claim is. The Colliwobbles referred to Collingwood being in a winning position only to lose the game, no one had this game won until the final quarter. Collingwood were pressing forward, and looked like they were going to. But then the Cats turned the tied and then took it.
I have heard also the term choke thrown out, but correct me if I am wrong, wasn't Geelong heavy favourites to win this Grand Final, and win it well? Well to me that seems that if anyone would have been called chokers, would have been the Cats if they'd lost. But I don't use that term, I hate it, and hate those who don't give credit where it's due.
It takes a good team to make a Grand final, it takes an even better team to win them and Collingwood just weren't that here. It's been a case in the past as well, Collingwood were good enough to make Grand Finals but lacked the ability to win them.
But unlike previous loses in a Grand Final I wasn't as shattered with the loss, I've moved on from it and accepted it. I am still not happy about it, but what can you truly do? Things happen, Collingwood has a side that will be there abouts again the Cats too depending on whoever else retires. Right now Ling, Mooney, Milburn are gone from the Cats still a dangerous list left.
In the all, all I can say is Congatulations to Geelong on winning the Premiership.
Bring on 2012.
