Pre-season comp, or more AFL Rounds?
February 12th 2010 01:29
Every season we hear more and more people out there voice their dislike for the Nab Cup, saying they do not see that is is worth the energy and that we should be getting more AFL rounds Well I am one that calls it the "Who Gives A Toss" Cup, but I do see some advantages in having the competition, I just do not see a major point in winning the cup. Sure some of the clubs that need money are going to go out and give it their best to win the cup to gain some money in the bank. But what about the clubs that have the money? Well they do not care as much.
But then we have people calling for more rounds, starting the season earlier and dumping the pre-season competition well I am not sure I honestly want the comp to be gone. I see this as a chance to have some young kids get a game, and have them all show something before the serious stuff happens, well what if we add a few more interesting features, add some put together teams, like what if the best 40 players from the WAFL, QAFL. VFL, NSWAFL, SANFL, and Tasmania get together in their state colours and play in a competition that will see Tasmania, WA, SA, Victoria, NSW, and the AFL clubs play in a competitiont hat will still be a knockout the winning team gets themselves a money pay out, the winning state, well their governing body is given some money to put into youth development.
But let's also look at this, we can still have money goto the states still, I am sure there will be enough money made from this new competition that there will be some more good young players from each start developed by more programs made by the money that is made here in this comp. i would certainly be intereted in seeing a Tasmanian side playing in an AFL competition, playing to help make Tasmanian football bigger and better every year, I could see some teams being more serious about not wanting to lose to some lower ranked leagues.
Or maybe we can take the top teams from each league, now I am not sure the top teams so I am going to make a judgment here on them this is just my example of the league I wuld have for the pre-season.
Division One
AFL Clubs
Division Two
Glenorchy (Tas)
Clarence (Tas)
Burnie (tas)
Devonport (Tas)
North Hobart (Tas)
Williamstown (Vic)
North Ballarat (Vic)
Collingwood (Vic)
Port Melbourne (Vic)
Casey Scorpions (Vic)
WA Clubs (5)
SA Clubs (1)
Division Three
SANFL Clubs (4)
QAFL Clubs (5)
NSWAFL Clubs (5)
NT Clubs (5)
So now there are 3 divisions, steaming from different states, this could see some of the smaller clubs paid whatever gate they get from the games, plus a small fee for participating, now I know this is going to be uneven a bit, but all three divisions do not play the AFL until they are down to a few teams, now Division 3 has more teams and would need 1 more club I guess that will come from Victoria as well, or maybe it can be a combined ACT Team, but this here would have the comp see teams playing getting a bit of a hit out before their competitions start, and would allow the AFL to have a pre-season comp with someone at least wanting to win.
This idea goes back using the very old State Premiership Carnival that saw teams from each league battle it out for the national title, the national carnival hasn't been run in decades, Tasmania was going to bring back the state premiership in 2008, with the Southern Premiers Glenorchy taking on the Northern Premiers in Launceston, this never happened due to a pay dispute and a travel issue, both sides were then booked to face each other Round 1 of the new Tasmanian State League which saw the Launceston boys take the win, the Magpies were undermanned and lacked a bit of match practice in the game and were not in the right mindset and took it too lightly and were done, but that's not the point of this this can work.
It's better than having every year someone complaining about the pre-season competition, i have to say I am a fan of the super goals, I guess they could also add a bit of a half time entertainment feel make it more of a show piece and flash it up kinda like the Twenty20 has been going here in Australia where they have some fun, and make it less of a serious thing and have some fun giving players microphones and talking to them during the game.
Wouldn't it be fun to just hear from a player during a game once and awhile and have their thoughts on how their teams going? I mean I would rather this more than listening to an umpire during a game. Just make it more of a show, make it more fun, have a competition for fans to design a teams jumper for the Nab Cup and just make this a bit of a mess around, I mean, it's not a serious comp with the rules and such, so let's make it look more like that.
These are just some of my ideas, I mean, there are some that are good, some that may seem a bit tacky, but I would like to see a bit more of the Nab Cup, especially now my teams picked up Darren Jolly and Luke Ball, I'd also like to see some of the younger players Collingwood drafted longer then they have done in the past, I mean sure last season they made the Grand Final of it and lost, but the knock out bit has been a tad annoying.
Whatever happens I do still hope that there is still a pre-season competition and they do not take it away I would love to see it go on, and I am not sure that we need more rounds in the regular season because there is also a finals series, and stuff.
That's just a few ideas I would like to see rather than getting rid of a pre-season competition that I feel that the clubs need and sets up some for a big season ahead of the season. In any event the Nab Cup is coming, and I am looking forward to seeing the football back once again, it has been a long summer already without the football there.
