Sharrod Wellingham gets lucky after bump
July 11th 2012 14:27
Friday Night during the Magpies' loss to the Blues, Sharrod Wellingham had what can only be said as a brain snap that lead to him trying to bump and/or mark before hitting Kade Simpson.
Simpson ended up concussed and with a broken jaw, Wellingham was given 5 weeks and was able to take 3 because of his good record over his time in the AFL System, his rookie year was counted in the five years.
To Wellinghams credit though, he went and found out Simpson after the game and checked to see how he was. Simpson has since said it was apart of the game, and seems to hold no ill feelings towards Wellingham.
It seems there are some angry fans about as on Facebook a page known as "Wellingham is a dog" has popped up. Sharrod isn't a dirty player, he didn't need to jump into the contest, he probably if he wasn't so late taken the mark in that contest, may have still made contact with Simpson in the contest.
Stupidity and malicius intent are vastly different things, there have been many bad hits over the years, a lot worse than this one. Wellingham has accepted his stupidity and punishment, we all move on.
I don't believe there was any malicious intent involved, just one player that shouldn't have been in a contest, but this doesn't make Wellingham a "dog" an idiot? Perhaps. But there has been many more incidents of thuggery on the field.
This incident also adds another chapter of hatred in the rivalry of Collingwood and Carlton, with the Blues fans ready to rip shreds of Wellingham, Collingwood fans ready to defend the character of Wellingham.
But both players, and possibly teams, will move on from it, Kade Simpson will make his return in a few weeks, as will Wellingham and both will be back to playing the way they always do.
Wellingham can think himself lucky he only gets to serve 3 weeks.
