Tasmanian Govenment holding back Tasmanian AFL side

Tasmania are still trying to secure their very own AFL team even though Tasmania is shaping as a destination for "rejected" Melbourne clubs to branch out and try their hand at getting some new members on board. Hawthorn are bordering around 10,000 Tasmanian members since their push to play here in the state. The worry was after the election that the sponsorship was going to be slashed if the Greens were given more power in the state.
Tasmania's Labor Party and the Greens formed government in the state, whether or not the sponsorship issue comes up again is yet to be seen, but the Tasmanian Government is still the reason why an AFL Team may never be known soley as "Tasmania."
In 1996 Tasmania was going to get a multipurpose venue known as Glenorchy Stadium, it was going to stand where the Elwick Showgrounds are. The venue was due to be built by around 1999, and was going to seat 30,000 people, 16,000 seats were going to be undercover a final cost of the stadium would have been 34 million dollars, but once the AFL rejected Tasmania again the venue vanished off the face of the planet.
Since then the Government has spent money doing up Aurora Stadium, and thrown money at Lauderdale's football ground and other regional venues, Bellerive Oval was also upgraded as well.By the end of 2010 most Tasmanian State League venues will have lighting and will host night games by possibly 2012 10 million dollars is being spent on a sports complex in Kingston to entice more AFL games into the state, and if the country wins their bid at the 2018 or 2022 World Cup Tasmania may secure more games that season while the tournament is taking place, should it come to the country.
AFL Tasmania has tried in 2003 to secure one of three sides to Bellerive, Western Bulldogs, Richmond, and Melbourne, Andrew Demtriou came to Tasmania inspected Bellerive Oval which at that time was hosting the Tasmanian Devils in the VFL, and he rejected the venue as an AFL venue. Richmond's name again this season has popped up as a possible team to play in Tasmania, but the Tasmanian Government are not going to look to battle to bring them down here.
Tasmania's bid was again rejected despite it already having a full board room, president, sponsors, team jumper, and having a very professional bid ready for the AFL. But why was it rejected? Simple, Tasmania still lacks a big venue to host big blockbuster type games, Aurora Stadium would need more expanding, expanding other venues too would assist.
But the Tasmanian Government needs to revisit Glenorchy Stadium, this venue would attract would class events to the ground, bigger cricket matches, bigger sports games as well imagine if the Australian World Cup bid wins, and Glenorchy Stadium was up and running? Yes, Tasmania would be a lock for games it would even assist the state in an A-League bid should another future AFL bid fail.
Tasmania United can also find a home at the venue, the Socceroos could play international friendly's in the state and the NRL and ARU could find games moving to Tasmania as well, but the Tasmanian Government has let down the Tasmanian Sports community by putting this venue on ice and never bringing it back.
The races that used the venue are no longer there they have all moved across the road, to the Racecourse a parking area can be built under the venue as well, or even build one close by and then have a shuttle bus to the arena, there are many ways that this venue can be used and then have a massive company sponsor the venue, and the new sports brought to the venue would see the ground pay for itself.
Tasmania would be afforded more Test matches, and more high profile cricket tests as well, but right now if Tasmania does want to bring down these big events it must expand either another oval in the South in KGV Oval, by removing the hills around the ground and putting in some more grandstands, or build onto Aurora Stadium. But the best option will be for the Tasmanian government to bring back the idea for Glenorchy Stadium, with the help from AFL Tasmania, TCA, FFT, and possibly a naming rights sponsor on the stadium, since Aurora Stadium was once York Park, it's worked for other venues in Australia, AAMI Stadium, Telstra Stadium, Etihad Stadium, etc.
Maybe Virgin will be interested and it could be VirginBlue Stadium, or QANTAS Stadium, there's surely a lot of money out there from a big major sponsor if money was indeed a problem in regards to the stadium. But until there is a bigger and better venue Tasmania will not be granted their own team, how can they?
How can Collingwood come over? Carlton? Essendon? There is just not the room at Aurora Stadium, or Bellerive Oval for a massive game against these sides, even Hawthorn are growning out of the venue, they aren't really going to make the money they should they are coming down here because of the massive amount Tasmania's Government has thrown their way.
Why not take that and build this stadium? $34m for big events cannot be too bad, can it? Bellerive Oval holds 16,000, Aurora Stadium holds 23,000, KGV Oval can seat 18,000, and KGV Oval has not had many upgrades, it has had a new stand added to the venue to replace the one that burnt down back in 2007.
North Hobart Oval which has hosted AFL football in the past, even hosted a state of origin game holds 18,000, but 24,968 people were in attendance for the 1979 Tasmanian Football League Grand Final between Glenorchy and Clarence. That venue has also hosted a few games of football as well, and hosts TCA Grade Cricket as well.
The venue's surface has come under fire in recent times, as early as last year there were questions about the grounds futures, the State League Grand Final no longer gets played there, a final between Clarence and Devonport was moved from the venue to Bellerive Oval due to the surface. The SFL Grand Final has since been moved to KGV Oval from now on, or at least for the next few seasons.
Some of these grounds do need some running repairs, but there needs to be some money put out there for them to do so, at the moment Bartlett has given money for some grounds to install lights, KGV Oval is also going to be installing a brand new electronic scoreboard to the venue. West Park and Devonport Oval are lighting up as well.
Aurora, Bellerive and a few other venues already have lighting, Lauderdales oval has been upgraded as well. But Tasmania still lacks a venue that can hold a massive blockbuster ground if they were to actually get a team here.
It's time for Tasmania to join 2010 and get one.
