The Fallen Magpies

In the spirit of Anzac Day and the remembering of the fallen we remember the fallen Magpie football clubs, as well as explore the Magpie ranks.

There are officially 118 football clubs nicknamed the Magpies, 7 of which are not even Australian. The Magpie name is spread to Samoa, England, USA, Papuan New Guinea and Sweden.

Both the U.S and England have 2 teams named the Magpies, in the United States there are the Dallas Magpies, formed in 1997. Originally known as the Outlaws later on the Outlaws would be renamed the Magpies.

The Dallas Magpies would win the 2005 Mid-American AFL Premiership, the other Magpies in the states are the New York Magpies, formed in 1998 as the Magpies, won the National Championship Grand Final in 2001, and then won the Eastern AFL Premiership in 2005.


Kumtee Football Club plays in PNG and were Mount Hagen Football League Premiers in 1996, since then there hasn’t been much word about them.

In Samoa Line Up Football Club was formed in 1998 in the Samoan Australian Rules Football Association they played off in the Grand final that year and lost to Vaiala who are the Cats.

Lund Football Club are from Sweden they were first the Bulldogs in 1995, but folded that year, in 2003 they were renamed the Magpies and finished last.

Putney Football Club was formed in 1999 and in 2000-2001 were known as London Gryphons, in 2004-5 they were known as the Putney Magpies in the BARFL.

First of the fallen Magpies are Kempton from Kempton Tasmania, they first would play in the South East DFA in 1973 in 1975 that would move to the ODFA, they won 3 premierships (1976,, 1982, 1994) in 2003 the Kempton Football Club finished 5th on the ladder and would go into recess.

Cambridge would play in the Tasman FA, they would from 1978 to 2001, where they would fold. That same year the Tasman FA would also fold, Cambridge didn’t win a flag in the Tasman FA, or in club history.


Cygnet although not dead, are no longer Magpies, the club was formed as Lovett Football Club back in 1906 and competed as such until 1912 when Lovett FC changed their name to Cygnet and would compete in the Huon FL.

Cygnet would win every flag from l912 to 1991 then in 1994 they would win their next premiership. Cygnet would leave the Huon FL in 1997 and would be renamed Port Power and joined the then Southern FL.

Traynors Lagoon Football Club formed in 1907 and would be known as the Magpies in 1933, wearing a black jumper with a white vee, they would play in the Richardson Valley FA from 1907 to 1914 in 1922 they ended up in the Avon Valley FA winning the 1925 flag due to a forfeit.

The club would move to the Coonooer-Kara Kara FL which was then known as Kara Kara FL Traynors Lagoon FC disbanded in either 1938 or 1939 and was reformed in 1946 and would disband for the last time in 1947 after winning the flag against Kooreh.

Barkly Football Club were known as the Magpies back in 1925 and in 1933 changed to wearing Red and White, in 1937 they would wear purple and gold. They would fold in 1938 playing in the Pyrenees FA.

Hagley would play in the Deloraine FA from 1974 to 1991, in 1975 they were Premiers in 1991 they played in the Esk-Deloraine FA and beat Evandale for the flag that season.

In 1998 they went to the Northern Tasmanian FA they would play there until the clubs death. These are just a few of the clubs that have passed away with the Magpie name.
